For this we use the free software &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nirsoft.net\/utils\/pst_password.html\">PstPassword<\/a>&#8221; from Nirsoft.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Virus_scanner_fails\"><\/span>Virus scanner fails<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Windows doesn&#8217;t make things quite that easy for us. Although Nirsoft is a well-known provider of tools and has a good reputation, Windows Defender (presumably other virus scanners too) recognises it as a hacking tool or threat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ekiwi-blog.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/pst_6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"944\" height=\"312\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-61265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ekiwi-blog.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/pst_6.png 944w, https:\/\/ekiwi-blog.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/pst_6-300x99.png 300w, https:\/\/ekiwi-blog.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/pst_6-768x254.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 944px) 100vw, 944px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/ekiwi-blog.de\/22145\/downloads-vor-dem-download-auf-viren-pruefen\/>check at VirusTotal<\/a> doesn&#8217;t paint a good picture either. In the end, I decided to run the software only in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ekiwi-blog.de\/20127\/virtualbox-virtuelles-windows-10-einrichten\/\">virtual machine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To be able to undo any changes, I created a backup point. I copied the PST file into the virtual machine, then downloaded PstPassword and started the software.<\/p>\n<p>Then all that remains is to select the .pst file and the software determines three passwords.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ekiwi-blog.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/pst_8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"214\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-61273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ekiwi-blog.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/pst_8.png 624w, https:\/\/ekiwi-blog.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/pst_8-300x103.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Three passwords? The explanation is that the password protection of the PST file is not particularly secure. Different passwords open the PST file, like an old lock in which several other keys work.<\/p>\n<p>In my case, no password was the correct password that I assigned, but the Outlook file can be opened with the password without any problems.<\/p>\n<p>You can then change or remove the password in Outlook.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The &#8220;PstPassword&#8221; software worked without any problems during the test.
