Formatting large USB sticks with FAT32

Use Rufus to format large USB thumb drives with FAT32.

If you try to format a large USB thumb drive with FAT32 you can not use the Windows default format dialog. It just does not offer the option to select FAT32. There is no real technical reason behind that, it was just a decision a Windows developer did a long time ago.

If you need your USB drive formatted with FAT32 you can use the free software Rufus. In Rufus you select your USB device, select “Non bootable” for Boot selection and hit the start button. All data on the drive is deleted.

After a short time your USB drive is now formatted with FAT32.
