Convert an existing Windows into a portable version, which can then be booted via USB. The software WinToUSB promises this. It can be used to transfer an installed Windows to a USB data carrier and convert it into a Windows ToGo.
Cloning with other software fails, by the way. In a test with RescueZilla, the Windows could be cloned, but then only started with a blue screen.

We use a USB hard drive for our test. A hard drive is always a little slower, so in practice a fast USB stick or USB SSD is more suitable.
The WinToUSB software is available as a free version. However, only Home versions of Windows can be cloned here. For Pro, the paid version is required, which is reasonably priced at 30 euros.
Operation is simple, we select the “Windows To Go USB” option in the main menu.
We then select the current operating system as the source and our USB drive as the destination.
We start the process and Windows is now cloned to the USB data carrier.
Booting from USB device
Now the moment of truth, we restart the computer and call up the boot menu. Select the USB data carrier and start Windows. The Windows logo appears and, after a while, the login screen. This shows that we would have been better off using an SSD, but everything works. Windows starts and can now also be used on mobile devices.

Converting an existing Windows system into a portable version using WinToUSB proves to be a practical solution for transferring a Windows system to a USB data carrier and making it usable on the move.
The software is easy to use and, when used correctly, provides a functional Windows ToGo as shown in the test. With all programmes and settings of the current Windows installation. For example, if you switch to a new computer and want to archive the old one, you can easily do this with this method.
While the free version is limited to home editions, the Pro version offers extended options for a fair price of 30 euros.
For optimum performance, the use of a fast USB stick or a USB SSD is recommended, as conventional USB hard drives can cause longer loading times, as seen in the test.
