Windows 11: Replace cmd.exe with Windows Terminal

How can the cmd.exe be replaced by the Windows terminal?

With the Windows terminal, Microsoft now provides an alternative to the old command prompt. The terminal supports tabs and various consoles, e.g. for the Linux subsystem or Powershell. Microsoft has also announced that the command prompt will be replaced by the Windows terminal in the future.

It is already possible to use the more modern Windows terminal, instead of the classic Windows console.

Instructions

In the settings, we go to the sub-item “Privacy & Security”. Here we now go to the sub-item “For developers”. Scroll down a little and the setting for the terminal becomes visible. Here we can now select the Windows terminal.

As soon as the setting is active, the Windows terminal will open in future instead of the classic console.
