Work more productively with your laptop: USB monitors.
Modern workstations today usually have two or even more monitors. If you are travelling on a smaller scale and prefer to work with a laptop, you can of course also connect a desktop monitor. However, USB monitors are more compact and more practical when travelling.
Thanks to USB-C, it is now quite easy to connect an additional monitor. Special USB-C monitors not only take up little space, but are also compact enough to be carried in a rucksack when travelling. This means that there is no longer any obstacle to productive work in the hotel room. This also means that nothing stands in the way of spontaneously expanding your home office workstation.
The devices also receive power via the USB-C interface, so the cable clutter is kept to a minimum. However, if you work on battery power, you have to accept that it won’t last quite as long, as the monitor also consumes some power.
Connection via USB-C
Even though many monitors have additional inputs such as HDMI or display port, the USB-C connection is really fun. As a rule, only the USB-C cable is required here, which transmits the display signal and also supplies the power. When operating via HDMI or Display Port, an additional power supply is required, usually in the form of another USB connection. This creates a bit more cable clutter. Nevertheless, these interfaces are not bad, as they allow older devices or desktop computers to be connected to the monitor.
Which monitor do I choose?
The choice of monitors is now quite large. As a rule, you should pay attention to the resolution, size and functions. Full HD has proven to be the best resolution, 4K is now also available, so you should make sure that your laptop can cope with this. Many models only transmit 30 frames per second at 4K, which results in a jerky display. In addition, 4K does not offer the major advantages for sizes up to 15 inches (approx. 38 cm). Full HD monitors are also cheaper.
Another advantage is often that the second monitor is about the same size as the laptop. Otherwise, the display size diverges. This is also irritating. When it comes to interfaces, you should look at what you need. Even if the connection via HDMI is a little awkward, it can’t hurt if the monitor has this interface. Then you can also connect an Xbox, desktop PC or an old laptop.
Conclusion
If you regularly work productively on your laptop, it’s worth buying a USB monitor. It only really makes sense if the laptop also has a USB-C interface. As only one cable is required, you can quickly move your home office to another location and continue working there with two monitors. At around 200 euros, the prices are now at a very good level.
