Review: Kwumsy S2 Dual Monitor – Portable dual display for notebooks

A 3-monitor setup for the laptop, for the home office or on the move in just a few minutes.

Laptops are a practical thing, being able to work anywhere has its advantages. But it is often also practical to have a little more space on the screen. The use of multiple monitors has also become commonplace in the office. This increases productivity enormously.

On the road or in the home office, things are more difficult. The monitor is missing here. One solution is the Kwumsy S2 Triple Monitor. This extends the laptop’s screen with two additional monitors, one on the left and one on the right. The monitor is attached via a snap-on or spring mechanism. Power is also supplied via the laptop. But let’s take a closer look. The price is 299 euros.

Hardware, scope of delivery, processing

Let’s unpack the thing. In the packaging we find, in addition to the monitors, a bag for transport, a manual and various cables. USB-C, HDMI and USB-A cables. Depending on the connections on the laptop, we have to use different cables.

The monitors both make a good impression. Basically, it’s a large hinge that allows the monitors to fold out on both sides. It’s a little unusual at first, especially when folding up, as we have to unfold the spring mechanism slightly. However, everything seems quite stable. There is a stand on the back.

Mounting on the laptop

Attaching it to the laptop requires a little practice the first time. Basically, we unfold the monitors and then attach the monitor to the monitor lid from behind. A spring mechanism then holds the monitors to the laptop.

There is also a stand to prevent it from tipping over backwards. The manufacturer specifies a size of up to 17 inches, although my 15 inch was rather small.

With my Thinkpad L15 it just about fits, with my company laptop an HP with 15 inches it fits more smoothly as it is a bit more compact.

Apart from that, it’s stable as long as you’re working on a normal desk. With a bit of practice, it also goes faster.

Connections to the notebook

I was also curious about the connections from the notebook to the monitor. Basically, there are two monitors, which also have to be connected separately. The ideal situation is to connect both monitors via USB-C. Then only two cables are needed, as USB-C transmits power and display signal.

My notebook has two USB-C ports, but that’s the end of simultaneous charging? Fortunately not, the power supply from the laptop can be connected to the display and then loops the power supply through.

With my company notebook, the picture is slightly different, only one USB-C port, which I normally also use for charging. Plus one HDMI.

A cable is included for this, which establishes the connection via HDMI to “USB-C”. I also need a second USB cable for the power supply. So three cables.

Before buying, you should therefore check whether it fits. Either two USB-C ports or USB-C and one HDMI port. With older notebooks, it can also happen that only one external display can be operated or the USB-C port does not output a display.

In practice, technical data

The monitors were recognised immediately. They can now be set up and configured in Windows. Basically, the displays are recognised like other monitors. Both displays have Full HD resolution. The display quality is excellent and the brightness is sufficient for indoors. In summer on the balcony it becomes difficult, but this also applies to the laptop’s main display.

The angle of both displays can also be changed. The big advantage of the solution is that the displays are right next to each other. With my previous USB-C monitor, I always had to turn my head a little more. Here you almost have the displays in front of you. The displays are viewing angle stable thanks to the IPS panel. I find it more comfortable when they are almost straight to the main display, as the image or viewing angle becomes oblique.

Installation takes 2-3 minutes. There is a bit of cable clutter, but that wouldn’t be any different with other displays. It just takes up a bit of space, on the other hand much less than other solutions.

I see its main use in the home office or when travelling, for example, if you have enough space and a desk available. I wouldn’t unpack the thing on the ICE, but in the evening in a hotel room or on holiday is quite practical. Or even if you’re looking for a compact setup on your desk at home.

When the displays are no longer needed, it doesn’t take up much space when folded up. The cables can also be stored in the bag, which also protects the displays.

Conclusion

Basically a pretty cool thing. There’s something about connecting two monitors to your laptop. Especially as both displays also have full HD resolution. I certainly won’t be lugging these things around with me all the time, but it’s a practical thing for the home office on the company laptop or on holiday when there’s a bit more to do in the evening.

The workmanship is great, as is the picture quality. If I still had a wish list, it would be a connection with just one USB-C cable. There’s a bit of cable clutter lying around, but that’s complaining on a high level. If it were technically possible at all.
