Use an Android tablet as a second monitor with SuperDisplay

Secondary display via USB and Wi-Fi. SuperDisplay put to the test.

I have a new Android tablet, which I wanted to use as a second monitor. There are various ways to do this, e.g. Spacedesk or Deskreen.

Spacedesk has been causing problems recently; Deskreen works well, but requires some additional hardware. Another alternative is “SuperDisplay“. This works similarly to Spacedesk with a driver and app. The app costs €18, a one-off payment with no subscription, but can be tested for a few days.

Setup

On the Android device, we need the app, which we can get from the App Store. The purchase is processed as an in-app purchase, which has the advantage that it can also be used on other new devices at no extra cost.

On the computer, we need the driver, which is available to download from the manufacturer’s website.

Connection via USB

The app supports two connection modes: USB or Wi-Fi. The display was only recognised via the USB-C connection after I had enabled developer mode on Android. It then worked. The display appears in Windows and can be configured.

As well as the advantage of the tablet being charged, the connection is fast and stable. There is some lag, but it is within acceptable limits. Touch works, and stylus operation is also possible, provided one is available.

Connection via Wi-Fi

Second test: Wi-Fi. For this, we establish the connection via the software. The app on the tablet displays the IP address, which we use to connect.

It works, but it’s not much fun. In my test, the connection was noticeably slower and laggy. It’s enough for a documentary on a second screen, but it doesn’t really make work enjoyable.

Lag, speed, features, conclusion

The conclusion depends very much on whether you want to use USB or Wi-Fi. The USB connection works well; Wi-Fi is rather average. Videos also run quite smoothly via USB. It’s enough for a YouTube video playing in the background.

Otherwise, the app is handy, as you can quickly use your Android device as a second monitor.

People are complaining about the price of 18 euros in the reviews, but I think it’s fair. It’s a one-off purchase, not a subscription.
