I wanted to install a lean Linux system on my netbook. In addition to Xfce, openSuse also offers a “Generic Desktop”. But which window manager is behind it?
The term “Generic Desktop” is not really meaningful, but I thought I’d give it a try.
It turns out that IceWM is installed as the window manager. This Windows manager is quite slim and ideal for machines that do not have a lot of hardware power. Another advantage is that hardly any additional software is installed. No LibreOffice or other software is installed. Of course, subsequent installation is no problem.
In terms of design and operating concept, it reminds me a little of the good old days of Windows 95 – Windows 2000 or early KDE versions. In short, no frills and therefore ideal for my netbook.
