VeraCrypt: Keyboard layout for system encryption

Which keyboard layout for system encryption with VeraCrypt?

The question recently arose as to which keyboard layout VeraCrypt uses for system encryption when entering passwords before booting. After all, problems are to be expected if you use umlauts, for example, but then use an American layout when booting.

It turns out that the English layout is always used. When setting up the encryption, VeraCrypt switches to the English layout and also prevents a change to a different layout.

Special characters and keys are of course still possible. You just have to press the corresponding key. Although no umlaut appears here, the corresponding character of the English layout does.
